How to Write a Love Song (with help of AI) About Someone You Love

One of the best ways to write a love song is to write from personal experience. It could be about a lost love, a hard breakup or even a relationship you’re in. When you write love songs, they need to be relatable to have an effect on the listener.

It might seem daunting to write love songs if you have never written one before. There is a chance that you might be a "practical person", and do not enjoy talking much about your feelings even if you know how you feel. But the key to writing a great love song is expressiveness. Analyze and explain your emotions with every word you write.

Take David Virgil's words for example. He is a songwriter and singer living in Seattle. "It is fairly easy, and I have written dozens of love songs. I am somewhat of a true romantic and have someone in my life that I truly love. He shared on his social media page. "Writing love songs about her is sometimes easier than expressing how I feel to her".

The keyword here is "express", don't be shy. And if you have never experienced love, or would rather not go down that memory lane, you can borrow the story of someone close to you, or an event that happened around you.

This will help you describe the emotions more clearly, even if it is not your own story. Great songs have been written with this method. These songs whipped up emotions in listeners just as much as it would have if they were the singer's own story.

One of such songs is the 1971 hit song Layla by Derek and the Dominos. English songwriter Eric Clapton read a copy of the 12th century Persian poem Layla And Majnun. The poem is based on a 7th century Arabian story of a young man and his unrequited love. He got inspired and wrote the beautiful lyrics of this world famous song.

Another good example is I Don't Want to Miss a thing. Diane Warren, Famous American songwriter got her own inspiration after listening to a conservation between the Hollywood couple Barbra Streisand and James Brolin. James Brolin had expressed that he missed his wife even when he was sleeping. Diane was inspired to write what became one of the theme songs for the 1998 movie Armageddon.

How to write lyrics to a love song

It is important to have an idea of what you want to write in your first and second verse, before you start. Think of how you want your listener to understand your story. A love song can be a journey. Do you want to talk about the past and build up to the present? Do you want to share all the joys of the present and reminisce on the past?

You can write the story you want to tell, and  build your lyrics with it. Here is a structure you can build your lyrics with.

  1. Start the first verse talking about yourself (Use the pronouns Me or I).
  2. Continue the second verse talking about your love interest (You).
  3. The third verse or bridge should be about the both of you (Us).
  4. Describe your past (before you met them), then the present and future of you both.
  5. List the "humorous" or cute faults of your love interest. (Quick one? "You never remember to put the toilet seat cover down").
  6. Find the right words. Your words should be specific, charming, emotional, genuine and intuitive.
  7. Take care to use metaphors tactfully and avoid  clichés..
  8. Conclude your piece with contrasts. It will heighten the effect of your words..

How to write a love song for her

Your her might be a random beautiful woman, a crush, your girlfriend or even your wife but one rule applies to all: Be Romantic! Being romantic will have a significant effect on her. You don't think so?

Here's why,

Women love romantic gestures!

In one survey, 80% of the women who participated rated their partner waking them up to a cup of coffee more romantic than being gifted an expensive handbag or a pair of shoes.

Writing a love song can get you a 5-star rating from your woman. It shows her how special she is, and how much she means to you.

Here is a method you can employ to write a great love song for her even as a beginner:

Get inspired

  • Think of the times you have spent together, the day you met, the day you realized you liked her, your first kiss, your first fight, etc..
  • You can also listen to great love classics for inspiration.

Confer compliments

  • Praise her beauty.
  • Emphasize her intelligence.
  • Compliment her personality and sense of humor.

Be vulnerable

  • Express your feelings.
  • Give her credit for the little things she does for you.

Be unique

  • Use specific things that apply to only your relationship. Inside jokes between you both is a good example.
  • Do not plagiarize another song.
  • If you are aiming for perfection, read the song to a female friend first to get their opinion. You’ll get useful feedback if you do this.

How to write a love song for him

To write a love song to a man, the method is the same as the one explained above. The exercise to get inspiration and the structure of the lyrics applies to writing a love song for a man too. But you need to take note of some important things.

Your love song lyrics will make a big impression on him when they express appreciation.

You might find it hard to believe, but men love to be appreciated, and they enjoy being showered with attention just like a woman would. If you don’t believe me, here’s what some men have to say.

Women's health magazine talked to several men, and these are the gestures women made that struck a chord in their heart.

"I'm usually the one surprising her on Valentine's Day, but this past holiday she told me not to plan anything. She made my favourite meal for dinner, we watched movies and later that weekend she took me to a Jazz brunch which was pretty awesome". Darrion M

"When my girlfriend and I were younger, a family member of mine broke my Xbox and I was stuck without a means of entertainment (which if you know me is a sort of hell). She worked at Coldstone at the time and used her hard-earned money to buy me a new one with some additional games. This was a big deal at the time as we were both in high school and it was something you'd never really expect.” Nelson S.

"She put notes of appreciation and love in my lunch box. Earlier this year when my job was taking its toll on me, she wrote a note saying how proud she was of me and how I was handling everything and that she was praying everything would get better for me, because I deserved it." Dan S.

"She believed in me." Brad F.

See? A few other things to note are:

  • The song shouldn’t be so long that it bores him.
  • Acknowledge the nice things he does that only a few people notice.
  • Highlight a few events or words he has said lightly in the past. This shows him that you’re attentive.
  • Match the message of your lyrics to your mood.
  • Affirm and reaffirm your love for him.

How to write a love song in different genres

Love can be expressed in various forms, and love songs can be sung in different genres. As long as your message is strong, singing them in a ballad, rap, or R&B, style will not reduce their efficacy. In fact, you’ll create a bigger impression if your love song is sung in their favorite style.

  2. Write the song with authenticity, like the way you’d speak. It should come from your heart.

  4. Get to your chorus in 45 seconds.
  5. Repeat melodic phrases.
  6. There are two structures of country music. You can explore both and decide which you prefer:

Popular structure: Verse 1 > chorus > Verse 2 > chorus > instrumental > breakdown chorus > full chorus.

  1. Popular country music progression chords are CM FM GM G7M DM Am Em BM and Bm. Personalize this to suit your style. Pick any three major chords and one minor.

If your loved one is a millennial or Gen Z, it is likely that they know many rap songs by heart. 5. Tell your story with the lyrics four lines at a time. i.e
    1. Tell your perspective of the love story in line 1 - 4
    2. Explain how it has changed your life and how friends feel about the relationship/what you told them about her in line 4 - 8
    3. Explain how you intend to progress with this relationship (you can make affirmations and promises here) in line 8 - 12
    4. Express how excited you feel about your future with your partner or how happy you think you both will be in line 12 - 16.
  6. Finally say it out loud, start slow and increase the tempo, edit any awkward phrases, and that's it.

Use these love song lyrics ideas to create your own love song

As a beginner it can be difficult at first to write lyrics on your own. We have combined below some excerpts of some of the greatest songs in history. These songs are of different styles. We hope this fans the flames of your creativity and inspires you to write your own lyrics.

Sad love song

Love will hurt from time to time, because people can hurt each other, unintentionally. Writing from pain can be a powerful way to write a song that’s emotionally charged.

When you want to write a sad love song, do your best to dig deep and feel all the emotions. Armed with that sentiment, write your lyrics. You’ll likely create something that readers will feel deep inside them.

Below is an example you can use for inspiration:

I'm not the best at showing my emotions

You cut me deep and you left me wide open

I fought the demons that lie in between us

They'd think we're perfect if they'd ever seen us, but

I guess this sounds like another sad love song

Excerpt from Another Sad love song by khalid

The Compliment

There’s something beautiful about everyone. If you love someone, find these things and praise them. Praise them lavishly. You’ll make them blush deeply.

In this example, Frankie J praises his woman exuberantly:

When I look at you baby

I see a shining star

But when you look in the mirror girl

You don't know who you are

You give yourself no credit

For all the things you've done

Just look at the blessings

And all you've got

Excerpt from How beautiful you are by Frankie J

A Request

Although you should give to the ones you love, it’s not a bad idea to ask them for things too. After all, love should be mutual..

In this excerpt, Elvis asks for tender love:

Love me tender

Love me sweet

Never let me go

You have made my life complete

And I love you so

Love me tender

Love me true

Excerpt from Love me tender by Elvis Presley

Unrequited Love

Sometimes, those we feel intensely for don’t feel the same way. It can be intensely painful.

If you’re in that situation, or you’ve been there, dig deep and bring the pain to the surface. Write intensely, expressing the pain you feel.

You love her

But she loves him

And he loves somebody else

You just can't win

And so it goes

'Til the day you die

This thing they call love

It's gonna make you cry

I've had the blues

The reds and the pinks

One thing for sure

Excerpt from Love Stinks by The j.Geils band.

A Plea

Don't leave me in all this pain

Don't leave me out in the rain

Come back and bring back my smile

Come and take these tears away

I need your arms to hold me now

The nights are so unkind

Bring back those nights when I held you beside me

Excerpt from Unbreak my heart by Tony Braxton

A plea to stay together.

Oh, won't you stay with me?

'Cause you're all I need

This ain't love, it's clear to see

But, darling, stay with me

Why am I so emotional?

No, it's not a good look, gain some self-control

And deep down I know this never works

But you can lay with me so it doesn't hurt

Excerpt from Stay with me by Sam Smith

Investigate and praise how they make you feel.

Let me tell you why I love him

Cause he is the truth

Said he is so real

And I love the way that he makes me feel

And if I am a reflection of him then I must be fly cause

his light it shines so bright I wouldn't lie

Excerpt from The truth by India Arie

Celebration

I feel so close to you right now

It's a force field

I wear my heart upon my sleeve, like a big deal

Your love pours down on me, surrounds me like a waterfall

And there's no stopping us right now

I feel so close to you right now

Excerpt from Feel so close by Calvin Harris

Happy love

Baby, I'm dancing in the dark

With you between my arms

Barefoot on the grass

Listening to our favourite song

When you said you looked a mess

I whispered underneath my breath

But you heard it,

Darling, you look perfect tonight

Excerpt from Perfect by Ed sheeran

Ask something from your love

Come with me my love

To the sea

The sea of love

I want to tell you

How much I love you

Excerpt from Sea of love by Cat Power

Rejected love

All I can ever be to you is a darkness that we knew

And this regret I got accustomed to

Once it was so right

When we were at our height

Waiting for you in the hotel at night

I knew I hadn't met my match

But every moment we could snatch

I don't know why I got so attached

It's my responsibility

You don't owe nothing to me

But to walk away, I have no capacity

Excerpt from Tears dry on their own by Amy Winehouse

Admiration song

Wise men say

Only fools rush in

But I can't help falling in love with you

Shall I stay?

Would it be a sin

If I can't help falling in love with you?

Excerpt from Can't help falling in love by Elvis Presley

Ending love

Staring at the bottom of your glass

Hoping one day you'll make a dream last

But dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyes

Maybe one day you'll understand why

Everything you touch surely dies

Excerpt from Let her go by Passenger

Young Love & First Love

Way on the other side of the Hudson

Deep in the bosom of suburbia

I met a young girl she sang mighty fine

Tears on my pillow and Ave Maria

Standing by the waterfall in Paramus Park

She was working for the friends of BAI

She was collecting quarters in a paper cup

She was looking for change and so was I

She was a Jewish girl, I fell in love with her

Excerpt from Ariel by Dean Friedman

Desire & Seduction

Whispered something in your ear

It was a perverted thing to say

But I said it anyway

Made you smile and look away

Nothing's gonna hurt you baby

As long as you're with me, you'll be just fine

Nothing's gonna hurt you baby

Nothing's gonna take you from my side

Excerpt from Nothing's gonna hurt you baby by Cigarette After Sex

Taboos & Forbidden Love

I won't lie to you

I know he's just not right for you

And you can tell me if I'm off

But I see it on your face

When you say that he's the one that you want

And you're spending all your time

In this wrong situation

Excerpt from Treat you better by Shawn Mendes

Searching & Singlehood

I want to live

I want to give

I've been a miner for a heart of gold

It's these expressions

I never give

That keep me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old

Keep me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old

Excerpt from Heart of gold by Neil Young

Loneliness & Longing

Clock strikes upon the hour

And the sun begins to fade

Still enough time to figure out

How to chase my blues away

I've done alright up to now

It's the light of day that shows me how

And when the night falls, loneliness calls

Excerpt from I wanna dance with somebody by Whitney Houston

Crushes, Infatuation, & New Loves

I'm so into you, I can barely breathe

And all I wanna do is to fall in deep

But close ain't close enough 'til we cross the line, hey yeah

So name a game to play and I'll roll the dice, hey

Excerpt from Into you by Ariana Grande

Romance & Commitment

When your legs don't work like they used to before

And I can't sweep you off of your feet

Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?

Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?

And, darling, I will be loving you 'til we're 70

Excerpt from Thinking out loud by Ed sheeran

Intimacy & Companionship

I can still feel the way you want me when you hold me

I can still hear the words you whispered when you told me

I can stay right here forever in your arms

And there ain't no way

I'm letting you go now

And there ain't no way

And there ain't no how

I'll never see that day

Excerpt from Forever and always by Shania Twain

Jealousy & Rivalry

My girl's got a big mouth

With which she blabbers a lot

She laughs at most everything

Whether it's funny or not

And if you see her

Tell her it's over now

I want a girl who will laugh for no one else

When I'm away, she puts her makeup on the shelf

When I'm away, she never leaves the house

I want a girl who laughs for no one else

Excerpt from No one else by Weezer

Complications & Conflicts

Once upon a time, we swore not to say goodbye

Something got a hold of us and we changed

Then you sat alone in pride

And I sat at home and cried

How'd our fairytale just end up this way?

Excerpt from H a.t.e.u by Mariah Carey

Apologies, Compromise, & Reconciliation

Can you forgive me again?

I don't know what I said

But I didn't mean to hurt you

I heard the words come out

I felt that I would die

It hurt so much to hurt you

Excerpt from Forgive me by Evanescence

Rejections, Breakups, & Divorce

You dedicated, you took the time

Wasn't long 'til I called you mine

Yeah, yeah

Since you've been gone

And all you'd ever hear me say

Is how I pictured me with you

That's all you'd ever hear me say

Excerpt from Since U been gone by Kelly Clarkson

Love Itself – Reflections & Advice

It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside

I'm not one of those who can easily hide, I

Don't have much money but boy, if I did

I'd buy a big house where we both could live

Your song by Elton John

How to Write A Melody For Your Love Song

It is important to have a pleasing sound to accompany your lyrics. A good melody will make your loved one want to listen to the song again and again. It is also easier to imprint the lyrics of a song that has a very good melody in their heart.

Chords and Melodies

To create the best melody for love songs Niko Kotoulas, New work based pianist analysed over 100 songs and selected two chord progressions used most often in these songs. A popular one and a unique one.

Popular love song chord progression:

CM / Am / FM / GM

"Elvis, The Beatles, Elton John, Ariana Grande all use this chord progression specifically for love songs" Niko Kotoulas  stated.

Unique love song chord progression:

Am / Em / FM / CM / Dm / CM / GM

These two progressions are easy even for beginners. You can use it to make melodies for your love song.

How to write lyrics to a melody

Here, we have written two different ways that famous artists use to add lyrics to their melody. This first guide below is perfect if you have lyrics or can write one. Again, you can get inspiration from the song excerpts we shared above.

  1. Write your lyrics.
  2. Find a rhythm by saying your words out loud over and over. Listen for the natural stresses in the phrases. Create a beat from this.
  3. Find a melody by listening to the pitches as you read your words aloud.
  4. Note the pitches, and recreate them with music notes. You can use a piano or even piano apps. Go over each music note till it sounds like the pitch of your lyrics when you read it aloud.
  5. Add this melody to the rhythm you created.
  6. Let your intuition lead you. Go over each line, verse and hook again and again till it sounds right.

If you do not have lyrics, you can freestyle your way into a beautiful sound with this second guide.

  1. Establish a melody and a flow. It will probably sound gibberish for a while but just go with the flow. Don't feel awkward to “da di da da di da” till your sound forms completely.
  2. Listen to the melody you have created and determine the emotion; humor, beauty, erotisim, sadness, relaxation, dreaminess or defiance.
  3. Your Eureka can take up to a week, it's normal. So you can use dummy lyrics to test how the melody you are creating might flow with real words.
  4. As you continue, words will keep dropping in your mind. Write them down and start building your song's story.
  5. Finally, mould the words to the melody.

Song editing

The final part of creation is editing. Your lyrics, your rhythm and melody all have to be checked again, and vetted by a neutral listener.

The Ideal Length of a Love Song

The ideal length of a love song is three to five minutes. We strongly recommend though that it should be three minutes long, especially if your love song is for him or a Rap song.

To check if your lyrics are perfect, sing them out loud to yourself and make corrections. If something sounds awkward to your ears, they probably would to someone else too.

Next, sing to a friend. Accept all constructive criticism and make final corrections.
